Andover student wins Gilman Scholarship

2015 Dec 2

Jamie Tyrrell '17, an Asian Studies major from Andover, MN, whose regional interests include Japan and Korea, has received a Gilman Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. The Gilman award provides up to $5,000 to apply toward study abroad or internship program costs. The Gilman Scholarship program aims to diversify the students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Students receiving a federal Pell Grant who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply.

Jamie will pursue her study abroad in South Korea, at Seoul's prestigious Yonsei University in spring 2016. In addition to learning the language, Jamie is excited for the chance to experience life there firsthand through home-stays with Korean families and participation in volunteer activities in her community. Following her return from Seoul, she will give campus presentations on international study and the Gilman award during the first week of the fall semester 2016.

Jamie said that she benefited from the advice of Prof. Erik Kulke in selecting her program and preparing the scholarship application. According to Prof. Kulke, "Carthage had a number of excellent candidates this year, and while I wish all of our eligible students had received awards, I'm very proud of Jamie for putting in the time and energy required to craft such a notable application."

Raised in Andover, MN, Jamie chose to come to Carthage for its strong program in Asian language and culture. After graduation, Jamie hopes to return to South Korea to pursue a graduate degree in Korean history or Korean language and literature.

The Gilman Scholarship is highly selective, and applicants must submit essays outlining their plans for study abroad and beyond, as well as a follow-on project to encourage more students of limited means to consider international education. "Every student who receives a Pell Grant," said Prof. Kulke, "every single one, should apply for the Gilman Scholarship to help offset the cost of their study abroad experience. It's well worth it."
