Clarke Smith wins Japanese Government Scholarship

2016 Sep 12

The Carthage Japanese Department would like to congratulate Clarke Smith on her winning of the MEXT (Japanese Government Scholarship)! The scholarship will fully fund Clarke in her yearlong study abroad at Tokyo Gakugei University from Fall 2016 to Spring 2017.

The scholarship is distributed by the Japanese Ministry of Education and is awarded to those showing exceptional skill in Japanese.

This is the second time that a Carthage student has earned this prestigious scholarship. Carthage graduate Jacob Werschey won the MEXT scholarship in 2013; he is currently working as a coordinator for international relations (CIR) at the JET program in Japan.

Clarke studied Japanese for four years in high school before entering Carthage in 2013. At Carthage, she has sought opportunities to improve her Japanese language skills and deepen her understanding of Japanese culture. Clarke joined the J-Term study tour to Japan in 2015, and won the grand prize at the Japanese Speech Contest at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Spring 2016. She has served as a Japanese tutor for Japanese students, and was the vice present of Carthage Japanese Club.

After study abroad, Clarke will return to Carthage to complete her degree in Japanese, with minors in Asian Studies and Chinese.
