Colby student presents research at seventh annual Celebration of Scholars event

2017 May 2

Carthage College held the seventh annual Celebration of Scholars event on Friday, April 28, 2017. Celebration of Scholars is a poster exhibition that features original research, scholarship, and creative work completed by Carthage students.

Samara Hull of Colby presented "Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity at Carthage - Key Informant Interviews" at the event.

This is the project's abstract:

"Key Informant Interviews conducted in the Summer of 2016 investigated multicultural initiatives and diversity at Carthage College. The Interviews sought to explore these overarching themes through one-on-one semi-structured interviews with 13 key faculty and staff members. The Key Informant Interviews complement a student diversity survey conducted in 2015. Findings from the interviews were used in the creation of a faculty and staff survey regarding multicultural initiatives at Carthage College. Finding from the interviews included: 1. A strong desire for Carthage to model the real world/ greater society and, in order to do this, a need to increase diversity among students and or faculty. 2. The most pressing dimensions of diversity identified were issues surrounding race and ethnicity as well as the LGBTQ community. 3. Most of the people being interviewed had mixed feelings about the success of current multicultural initiatives."
