Fort Atkinson student presents research at seventh annual Celebration of Scholars event

2017 May 2

Carthage College held the seventh annual Celebration of Scholars event on Friday, April 28, 2017. Celebration of Scholars is a poster exhibition that features original research, scholarship, and creative work completed by Carthage students.

Devin Wermuth of Fort Atkinson presented "Developing Geospatial Applications for a Smarter Carthage Community" at the event.

This is the project's abstract:

"Geospatial applications (geo apps) allow users to collect, view, and interact with spatially explicit information. The convenience of these apps make them supremely useful in austere or fast-paced environments where personal computers can be more of a hindrance than a tool. Four teams from the Applied Projects in Geographic Information Science (GEO 4600) class sought to optimize four Carthage College affiliated endeavors by developing a geo app for each endeavor. For the admissions office, an app was developed to provide a self- guided tour of Carthage College for prospective students who are not able to participate in a guided tour of campus. Another app was developed as part of an interdisciplinary endeavor within the division of natural sciences, called Watershed Carthage. This app will be used by students to navigate to fixed sample locations within the Pike River Watershed so that they can collect and accumulate data in an effort to elevate water and habitat quality. A third app was developed that will allow students and faculty to record, share, and discover new hikes in Southeastern Wisconsin. The final app developed by students from GEO 4600 will allow students and faculty from the classics department to crowd-source data pertaining to ceramics found at their dig sites."
