Grayslake student receives prestigious Fulbright fellowship

2016 Apr 25

Michelle Nuetzmann was one of four Carthage College students to have been awarded a Fulbright fellowship to teach the English language and share American culture abroad next year.

Sponsored by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright Program operates in more than 160 countries as the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

The awards raise Carthage's total to 17 Fulbright fellowships in the past nine years.

Michelle Nuetzmann, a double major in German and music, will spend the 2016-17 academic year teaching at a German high school. She plans to engage with her community by joining local music ensembles, as well as creating and leading extracurricular discussion groups centered on multiculturalism.

"I often find that beneath all of these differences which separate people into groups, we are all similar in nature," Michelle wrote in her Fulbright application. "This concept has inspired me to continue to travel and explore."

This placement in Germany comes after a one-month high school exchange to Germany and a semester in Munich in spring-summer 2015. Michelle also traveled to China as part of a J-Term class focusing on music and culture. Following her time abroad, Michelle plans to work and travel while deciding on a field of graduate study, with the hopes of one day becoming a college professor.
