Highland student participates in a J-Term study tour to Rome

2017 Feb 8

Samantha Tedesco of Highland participated in a J-Term study tour to Rome with Carthage College.

The "Women in Public and Private Spaces: The Intersection of Gender, Politics and Religions in Ancient Rome" study tour examined and analyzed the roles of women (elite and non-elite) in contributing to the political, social, and religious lives of Rome (both public and private areas).

Although Rome was a patriarchal society, women were actively engaged as entrepreneurs, builders, priestesses, and advocates in the city of Rome. Students visited sites in Rome and its suburbium and the sites of Ostia, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Praeneste (Palestrina), Baiae, and Cumae. Through a combination of on-site talks and readings, students discovered the extent to which women had consequential roles in many facets of life in Rome.

J-Term is a special month-long period of study in which Carthage students explore subjects outside their majors or minors, discover new interests, and test their creativity through classes held both on campus and around the world. It's a month to experiment, create and dream. Carthage is ranked No. 4 in the nation among baccalaureate institutions for student participation in short-term study abroad.
