Janesville student represents Carthage College at Wisconsin Science Olympiad

2017 Apr 18

Leah Sanford of Janesville was one of three Carthage College students to participate in the Wisconsin Science Olympiad State Tournament on Saturday, April 8, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The trio ran the Experimental Design event for both the high school and middle school divisions. The event has student teams design, carry out, and write up a report on an experiment with an hour time limit. Over the course of the day, 94 teams competed in the event. In addition to helping a faculty member formulate the experiment theme for this year, the students set up the laboratory and graded all 94 reports.

Science Olympiad is a competition for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields. There are 28 events at the state tournament level, including a wide variety of topics such as materials science, anatomy and physiology, hydrogeology, remote sensing, and electric vehicles. More than 1,500 middle school and high school students competed at the Wisconsin state tournament this year. The winners of the state tournament advance to the National Science Olympiad tournament at Wright State University, to be held May 19-20, 2017.
