Oregon student wins MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship

2017 Sep 26

Carthage College student Andrew Igl, from Oregon, recently won the MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship. The scholarship will fully fund his yearlong study abroad at Tokyo Gakugei University from Fall 2017 to Spring 2018.

The MEXT Scholarship is distributed by the Japanese Ministry of Education and is awarded to the international students with dedication in Japanese language learning.

Andrew is the third Carthage student to be honored with this prestigious scholarship.

Andrew has been studying Japanese for two years at Carthage. He had the opportunity to take a study tour to Japan with other Carthage students via the Kakehashi Project in January of 2017, a tour that was funded by the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After returning from his study abroad experience, Andrew said, "I hope to engage with and encourage new students who are excited to learn more about Japan." Looking to the future, though undetermined, he plans to either teach English or do missionary work in Japan.
