More than 280 Carthage College students traveled with faculty on international study tours in January.

Fifteen members of the Carthage women's soccer team took a tour to Australia and New Zealand to watch four World Cup matches, compete in two friendly matches, and sightsee.

Students on the "Spanish Language Immersion in Guatemala" study tour traveled to northern Guatemala where they studied and experienced rural life in and around an agricultural community.

The "Kodaly Music Pedagogy in Context" study tour focused on the study of the Kodaly Method, one of the most important music pedagogy methods in the Western World.

The "Experiencing the Franco-Caribbean Culture of the Guadeloupe" study tour aimed to immerse students in the culture of Guadeloupe and to learn about the art and history of this French Caribbean "departement."

The "Women in Public and Private Spaces: The Intersection of Gender, Politics and Religions in Ancient Rome" study tour examined and analyzed the roles of women (elite and non-elite) in contributing to the political, social, and religious lives of Rome (both public and private areas).

Students on the "Namibia: A Sociocultural Journey" study tour had direct interaction with many of Namibia's distinct cultures. This experience was designed for the adventurous student, one who enjoys pitching in to help, conversing with nature, and does not mind the challenges of bush camping.

The "Mythological Japan and Musical Storytelling" study tour allowed members of the Carthage Wind Orchestra to discuss the use of mythological figures and storytelling within the historical context of ancient Japan.

Students on the "International Business and Cultural Analysis of Sweden" study tour learned about international business and marketing as they explore Goteborg, Sweden.

Students on the "Gender, Race, and Class: Social Identities in Modern London" study tour traveled the streets of London and studied how multiple social identities (e.g., gender, race, class) create unique experiences and perspectives for individuals.

With a stunning variety of spectacular natural environments, exotic wildlife, historic townships, uniquely sophisticated cities, world-renowned cuisine, and very lively and diverse culture the "Economics and Business in Southern Africa" study tour offered students a journey of discovery like no other.

"Biology and Geography of Nicaragua" provided a unique opportunity for students to experience clinical work or work on water projects.

"Biodiversity, Brains and Behavior" offered adventurous students the opportunity to study the ecology of a Caribbean coral reef ecosystem, learn about the evolution of nervous systems and behavior, and study Honduran culture.

This travel course examined the historical role of biodiversity and environment in the development of both Taiwan and Singapore.

The Biology and Geography of Nicaragua study tour provided a unique opportunity for students to experience either clinical work, or work on water projects. Both aspects provided students first-hand knowledge of the rural volcanic island of Ometepe, Nicaragua. Students also learned the fascinating history, culture, and environment of this country, and saw how all of this has affected the land and people.

Students were introduced to early German pioneers of psychology and learned how they shaped the development of modern psychology as an empirical science. While exploring distinct historical periods from a psychological lens, students also had the opportunity to visit historically significant sites in Germany and interact with German scholars and students of psychology.

This course comprised 23 days and 22 nights of travel, entirely in Spain, including a one-week stay in Madrid and a two-week stay in Valencia. The class also spent a day in Toledo (near Madrid) and another in Sagunt (near Valencia). The primary objective of the course was linguistic and cultural immersion. Both of these goals were realized through the mechanism of Spanish family homestays and Spanish language classes in private language academies.

This was a service-learning class that was conducted in China in collaboration with a Chinese school. Students spent four weeks in China. During the first three weeks, they taught English and studied Chinese language and culture in a rural school district in Henan Province. During the fourth week the students toured important historical sites in Henan Province and continued their Chinese studies.

The Omrit Settlement Excavations are an opportunity to combine an interest in history, religion, and art, with a sense of adventure and discovery. The site in northern Israel is home to a three-phase Roman temple and a settlement that grew up around the temple and persisted into at least the 13th century CE. Student workers have been instrumental in uncovering this amazing site, and adding to our understanding of the history and development of this important region of the world.

Students learned a variety of journalistic writing styles and engaged in sports journalism as they attended baseball games in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in June 2016. The course included attendance at Padres, Dodgers, Angels, Giants, and Athletics games over roughly two weeks.

This course examined the development of the "modern" movements in art and theatre at the end of the 19th century, and the impact and influences of the movement into the 21st century. This course explored the theatres, museums, and art galleries of New York City. Students saw productions at varying venues throughout the city including Broadway and off Broadway theatres.

"Spanish Language Immersion in Guatemala" took students to northern Guatemala where they studied and experienced rural life in and around an agricultural community with a population of only 500 people.

"Gender, Race, and Class: Social Identities in Modern London" showed students how multiple social identities (e.g., gender, race, class) create unique experiences and perspectives for individuals.

On "Religion and Society In Modern India" students encountered three contemporary Indian religious communities: Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs.

"Luther and the Reformation" had three emphases: the 16th century birth of the Lutheran Reformation, German Lutherans and the Nazi Holocaust, and the east-west divide symbolized by the Berlin Wall.

"Life and Politics: Surviving Socialism and the US Embargo in Cuba" was an integrative learning experience where students were exposed to several disciplinary perspectives from both U.S. and Cuban scholars and experienced the Cuban situation for themselves by exploring eight provinces over 15 nights on the island.

On "Representations of Germany's Past" students studied the ways that stories about Germany's past are told by the objects, places, and people they encountered during 18 days in the German cities of Berlin, Dresden, and Munich.

"Paris: A Capital Experience" lead students to Paris for two weeks, where they studied Parisian life while touring the city.

Students on this tour got to learn and practice the art of sports journalism in Europe as they got to report on the world's most popular game.
