Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Participants
Carthage College selected 36 students for its Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). The SURE program offers Carthage students in all majors an opportunity to engage in collaborative full-time research with professors. Students work closely with faculty mentors on a new or developing line of research. Many students present their research at the annual Celebration of Scholars event the following spring. SURE has been a hallmark of the Carthage experience since the mid-1990s. SURE started in the natural sciences and grew to include all academic divisions at Carthage.

The SURE program at Carthage offers students in all majors the opportunity to engage in collaborative full-time research with professors. Students work closely with faculty mentors on a new or developing line of research. SURE has been a hallmark of the Carthage experience since the mid-1990s. SURE started in the natural sciences and grew to include all academic divisions at Carthage. Each summer, between 25 and 50 students are chosen to participate.

On Oct. 9, Professor Melanie Nyhof and psychological science major Shannon Gegare '22, in collaboration with Professor Izak Lattu (Satya Wacana Christian University, Salatiga, Indonesia), presented research at the Peace and Justice Studies Association, and Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies Annual Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium awards Carthage students $95K
The NASA Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium and related space sciences projects made twenty awards to Carthage students and faculty this year, totaling $95,000. The Consortium funds a wide variety of STEM programs across the state, including undergraduate and graduate education, as well as faculty and post-doctoral work. Awards are made to students to defray tuition costs, to support research initiatives, and to provide participation in statewide and national competitions and programs. Faculty awards support research, teaching, and capstone projects.

Presented at national mathematics conference
These students presented their research based on the Ising Model, a mathematical model for the polarization ferromagnetic materials. They have been working together this summer to study and extend this model as part of the SURE program, and are advised by Professor Haley Yaple. The students gave two talks at MathFest, an annual conference for mathematics and math education that was held July 26-29 in Chicago.
