The Center for Student Success recognizes Fall 2025 peer coaches
Each fall, the Center for Student Success selects a group of volunteer student leaders to serve as peer coaches for the 10-week College Success Seminar. Peer coaches provide guidance and support to freshmen and plan course activities with a faculty/staff instructor.

Carthage students volunteer at the 2026 World Junior Hockey Championships
Seven Carthage students volunteered at the 2026 World Junior Hockey Championships in St. Paul, Minn. over 11 days (Dec. 26-Jan. 6). As volunteers, they helped in the Bold North Breakaway Fan Festival area, making it a memorable experience for fans, providing fan service, and ensuring the safety and positive experience for all who attended. To show appreciation for their service, the students received tickets to see the Canada vs. Czechia hockey game. The World Juniors brings together the best hockey players under 20 years old from 10 different countries (USA, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Slovaki, Finland, Czechia, Latvia, Denmark).

Carthage students participate in the regional American College Theatre Festival
Carthage students participated in the American College Theatre Festival. The Region 3 Festival took place at Madison College in Madison, Wis. Jan. 6-10. Region 3 includes students from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Western Ohio. The American College Theater Festival nurtures artistry across all theater disciplines, including playwrights, actors, directors, designers, dramaturgs, critics, technicians, crafts artisans, and more. Professors Martin McClendon, Kim Instenes, and Herschel Kruger accompanied the students. Prof. Instenes serves as the co-vice chair for the festival's Design, Tech, and Management portion. Prof. Kruger is a past regional chair of the festival and was awarded the prestigious ACTF Gold Medallion in 2023.

Carthage engineers attend national Society of Women Engineers conference
The Carthage engineering and computer science departments were well represented at the annual Society of Women Engineers conference in New Orleans this October. Students in attendance included engineering majors Juliana Alvarez, Lauren Howe, Maxine Lathrop, and Savannah Reisner, as well as computer science student Sarah Kersten. The students were accompanied by Kathryn Hasz, assistant professor of engineering. The conference attracted 20,000 engineering students and professional engineers. Between keynote speakers, panels, technical demonstrations, and networking lounges, there were ample opportunities for connection and growth. This year's theme, "Embrace Your Story," highlighted the value of all the cumulative experiences that make up one's life.

Carthage students attend Enactus World Cup in Thailand
Carthage College's Enactus student organization attended the 2025 Enactus World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, in September. Five student representatives traveled with their faculty advisor, Carter Rockhill, assistant professor of management and marketing. The students engaged with students from around the globe about projects focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. The World Cup took place in conjunction with the SX Sustainability Expo, which is the largest sustainability expo in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In addition to attending the Enactus World Cup, the students learned about Thai culture. Enactus, founded in 1975, is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that enables university teams to explore entrepreneurial initiatives that have a positive social and environmental impact in communities across six continents.

Carthage students attend Society of Women Engineers regional conference
Nine Carthage students attended the Society of Women Engineers regional conference hosted at Marquette University in September 2025. The event's theme, "Engineering the Extraordinary," provided a framework for a weekend of networking and professional development for engineering students from across the region. The conference program included two keynote speakers and two expert panels focused on different aspects of the engineering field. Students from Carthage attended the sessions to gain new insights and a deeper understanding of potential career paths.

Carthage Social Work students attend 2025 NASW-WI conference
Seven students from Carthage's Social Work department attended and served as conference volunteers at the 51st Annual National Association of Social Workers of Wisconsin (NASW-WI) Conference in the Wisconsin Dells from Oct. 29-31. Students learned about best practices in social work, networked with seasoned professionals and agencies, and established themselves as future leaders in the field. They attended workshop topics on the role of artificial intelligence and technology in social work, immigration issues, trauma-informed approaches to care, and strategies for preventing burnout and building resilience.

Carthage Social Work Students Attend National Association of Social Workers Advocacy Day
Twelve Carthage social work students attended the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-WI) Advocacy Day on April 9 in Madison, Wis., with Professor Rebecca Hornung, social work department chair. Attendees participated in workshops on advocacy skills, gun violence prevention, and public service student loan forgiveness programs, among other topics. Attendees had opportunities to meet with elected officials to discuss the importance of policies that impact social workers and the communities they serve. This experience was an empowering way for students to use their voices to impact public policies in Wisconsin, gain lobbying skills, and network with professionals in the social work field.

Carthage College School of Business and Economics Students Attend Conference in Austria
In March, seven Carthage School of Business and Economics students attended the 9th International Conference on Advanced Research in Business, Management, and Economics (ICABME) in Vienna, Austria. Carthage's Finance and Investment Club had the opportunity to network with professionals and engage with a diverse range of speakers on topics such as human resilience in the age of AI and the identification of efficient and inefficient workers based on their FFPQ scores. Chao Zheng, professor and chair of the Finance Department, accompanied the students.

Carthage Mock Trial completed its fall invitational season at the Fantastic Flyer Tournament, hosted by Lewis University Nov. 23-24. Members of the Mock Trial Team act as attorneys and witnesses and present the case as the plaintiff and defense while being scored on how well they know the law.

Jessica Fletcher '20 and Allie Wessel '20 present at national conference
Carthage College Neuroscience majors Jessica Fletcher '20 and Allie Wessel '20, and Professor Kevin Morris recently attended the 2020 Emerging Researchers in STEM National Conference in Washington, DC. Fletcher and Wessel both gave poster presentations on their research at Carthage. The conference gave awards to outstanding poster and oral presentations in each STEM field. Fletcher's poster describing her research with biosurfactants won second place in the chemistry division. The ERN conference is sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs and the National Science Foundation. Each year approximately 1600 graduate and undergraduate students from across the country attend.

Baltimore Named CCIW Player of the Week
Carthage College men's basketball forward Kienan Baltimore was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday, February 10. Baltimore led all scorers with 27 points as the Red Men beat No. 8 Elmhurst 81-77 on Wednesday on the road. The senior from Zion, Ill. finished the week with eight points and three assists as Carthage defeated Millikin 68-63 for their third straight victory. The Red Men return home facing North Park on Wednesday, February 12 starting at 7 p.m.

Carthage College's Slivinski named CCIW Men's Volleyball Player of the Week
Carthage's Matt Slivinski was selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Volleyball Players of the Week. Slivinski, a junior outside hitter from Willow Springs, Illinois and Lyons Township High School, averaged 5.46 kills for the 2-1 Red Men. He had 24 kills, five digs and hit .340 in a five-set loss to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). He then had 19 kills, four digs and hit .378 in a sweep at California Lutheran, followed by 28 kills and five digs in a five-set win against UC-Santa Cruz.

Ivan Esquivel Named to United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team
United Soccer Coaches announced their 2019 Division III All-Region teams, selecting Carthage's Ivan Esquivel to the Second Team in the Central Region. The senior adds yet another honor to his name after he was selected to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin First Team last month. Esquivel led the Red Men this year in assists with six, and finished second on the team with 14 total points. The midfielder tallied four goals on the season, scoring a game-winner against Alma on September 8, and an eventual game-winner against Millikin on October 26. This marks the third time in his career Esquivel was chosen to an All-Region team by United Soccer Coaches, after he was named to the Third Team as both a sophomore and junior.

Jacey Kent Selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team
United Soccer Coaches announced their 2019 Division III All-Region teams, selecting Carthage's Jacey Kent to the Third Team in the Central Region. Kent, who was named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin first team for the second consecutive year, finished the season with four goals and two assists for 10 points. The midfielder also registered one penalty kick goal on the season. This marks the first time in her career Kent was chosen to an All-Region team by the United Soccer Coaches.

Cooper Hawkins Collects CCIW Swim and Dive Honors
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) announced the winners of their men's and women's swim and dive players of the week on Tuesday, with Carthage College's Cooper Hawkins claiming an award. The men's swimmer of the week went to Cooper Hawkins who swam in 13 events during the Carthage College Classic this past weekend. Hawkins swam a season-best time 4:01.00 in the 400-yard IM for first, a season-best 1:52.65 in the 200-yard IM for first and a clocked time of 2:05.54 for second in the 200-yard breaststroke. The senior from Batavia, Ill. also tallied personal bests in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.70), 200-yard butterfly (1:58.15), 100-yard backstroke (54.74) and 50-yard freestyle relay split (21.81).
