To celebrate the Advent season, Carthage College students participated in the 149th Christmas Festival the weekend of Dec. 1-3, 2023 in the magnificent A. F. Siebert Chapel in Kenosha, Wis.

This festival brings together performers and designers from colleges and universities across the Midwest. From singing to acting to production, Carthage students were recognized in multiple categories for their hard work and talent.

Carthage Theatre saw great success at the annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF)! The KCACTF is a national theater program that invites students and faculty members from colleges and universities across the country to present their work and vie for national recognition in excellence. Throughout January and February, artists perform in eight Regional Festivals, and finalists then move on to the National Festival in April.

Five Carthage College students competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Musical Theater Auditions in Chicago. Due to the current stay-at-home order, singers were invited to submit video recordings to be judged virtually.

Carthage College's Nathan Takahashi earned first place in the state for junior men (classical) at the Wisconsin National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition at Viterbo University this past weekend.

The Carthage College Choir seized two first prizes, winning both categories at the renowned annual Internationaler Chorwettbewerb Spittal an der Drau, an international competition hosted in Spittal, Austria.

For the latest installment in its New Play Initiative, the Carthage College theatre program recently received national recognition in several categories through the 2018 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

The Carthage College Wind Orchestra performed a live accompaniment to one of the great silent film comedies, "The General," from March 1-6 on a tour of early 20th century Midwest theaters and opera houses.

Eight Carthage music students participated in the Wisconsin regional voice competition for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). The competition was held Nov. 2-3 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Each year, the Carthage Music Department holds its most prestigious music event, the Honors Recital, as a celebration of the excellent work done by its students. The students selected are honored as the best performers of the year. The recital's participants are chosen through a highly selective audition process. In order to be selected for the event, musicians must show mastery in their given instrument and choose a music that is self-contained, in that it focuses on a particular composer or theme.

As part of the 2017 Arts and Creativity Festival, Carthage hosted the "Here I Stand" Creativity Competition. In partnership with the Luther 500 Celebration, the competition encouraged submissions that celebrated the theme of "Here I Stand." Participants entered in the categories of visual arts, performing and interdisciplinary arts, and written word.

A group of Carthage voice students competed at the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition. Sophomore Laura Smith, from the studio of Prof. Elena Batman, was awarded the second prize in the sophomore women category. Laura faced tough competition from the most important music schools in the Chicago area.

Carthage College students participated in the American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) Region III festival in Indiana. ACTF is a premier festival for college and university theatre programs, with undergraduate and graduate students competing in the festival.

McKenna Rakestraw won the 2017 Wisconsin Choral Directors Association (WCDA) Student Conducting Competition. The event is held annually in conjunction with the WCDA state convention.

The concert featured the Carthage Choir and Carthage Women's Ensemble. Special guests included the Crystal Lake Central High School A Capella Singers, Glenbrook High School Master Singers, and Prairie Ridge High School A Cappella Choir. The event took place at the Chicago Symphony Center.

Senior Taylor Tibbs was awarded second prize in the German Academic Exchange Service-DAAD's "Bauhaus in Your House" photo competition this summer for her photo of one of the light fixtures in the Science Center.

Under the direction of Prof. Edward Kawakami, and in partnership with the Fifth House Ensemble, Carthage presented a day of Chamber Music.

Carthage senior JP Flores is a featured artist in Wisconsin Photography 2016, an exhibit at RAM's Wustum Museum in Racine. Wisconsin Photography is an annual statewide competition organized by the museum. The museum received 886 submissions from nearly 100 artists.

The Music Honors Recital is a long standing tradition at Carthage. It is considered "the most prestigious annual event celebrating our music students in individual performances" by Music Department Chair and Director of Carthage Choir Prof. Eduardo Garcia-Novelli. Students who wish to perform in the recital must go through an audition, which is a highly competitive process.
