Carthage College

COIL -- Carthage On Individual Liberty -- is a political catch-all group on campus, loosely affiliated with YAL (Young Americans for Liberty, a national organization. COIL fosters discussion about political views that tend to be ignored by the major parties (Federal Reserve, War on Drugs, Alternative Foreign Policies, etc.). All perspectives on all political issues are encouraged.

The Carthage College Republicans organization provides a forum for discussion and growth of the Republican Party, serves the Republican Party at all levels, and aids in the election of Republican candidates at all levels of government. The group also strives to develop strong leadership abilities and skills among Republican students as preparation for future service to the Republican Party and to the United States of America.

Carthage College Democrats is an organization dedicated to heightening political awareness on the Carthage campus and in the surrounding community. This group sponsors and runs debates, brings politicians and other speakers to campus, participates in philanthropy and community service projects, and more.

Want to play a role in bringing performers to campus? Join the Carthage Activities Board, one of the largest student organizations on campus. CAB selects, plans, promotes and produces campus events like Homecoming, Family Weekend, Senior Week, movies, musicians, comedians, indoor ice rinks and more. CAB is open to all students; just show up!

Art Club is open to all majors and artistic abilities. The club's main goal is to come together once a week to create, appreciate, and learn about art in a relaxing and stress free environment. All students are encouraged to attend the meetings when they are available to learn new creative skills and abilities and to participate in art appreciation with like-minded individuals.

BSU provides leadership opportunities for its members, sponsors activities that furnish social and academic enrichment for black students, and works to strengthen the image of black students in the Carthage community. BSU aims to build respect and tolerance between all races, and foster a unified bond between all students. The group is open to all interested students.

Carthage Allies is a group of LGBT supporters working to bring awareness and diversity to the Carthage campus. The group hosts a week of events leading up to the Day of Silence in the Spring, and holds various other programs throughout the year.

The American String Teachers Association, founded more than 60 years ago, is a membership organization for string and orchestra teachers and players, helping them to develop and refine their careers.

Alpha Chi Omega is a social sorority on campus. Members pride themselves on upholding the five membership criteria of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority: academic interest, character, financial responsibility, leadership ability, and personal development.

Active Minds is a national organization that aims to educate students about the prevalence of mental illness among college students. One in 4 college students suffers from some form of mental illness. The Carthage chapter of Active Minds aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health disorders on campus.

Student Government Association is an organization committed to serving the Carthage student body. Delegates are devoted to improving campus life for the entire community and work closely with the Office of Student Life and the Office of the President to achieve this goal.

The Annual Juried Student Art Show was held during Fine Arts Weekend. This show, open to all Carthage students and juried by a guest artist/critic, featured the best of drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and design.

Carthage Dance participated in two events during Fine Arts Weekend. First, there was a performance celebrating the opening of "Ebb and Flow," the new art exhibit in the Johnson Art Gallery. There was also an informal performance that featured original works created and performed by dance minors in the third and final feedback showing for the upcoming student dance concert, "Away From The Mirror."

Drawing on classroom work and independent projects, this event showcased a selection of ongoing student work on the screen. Midway through the semester, these thought-provoking short films were at various stages of completion. Students and professors were on hand to discuss the work.

What do an exciting world premiere play, a chamber orchestra concert featuring the winner of Carthage's first concerto competition, work by internationally acclaimed visual artists, a juried student art show, experimental student dance work, and the most critically acclaimed movie of all time have in common? They're all happened during Carthage's Fine Arts Weekend.

For the first time in Carthage College history, a Carthage student has received the prestigious Jo Anne Trow Undergraduate Scholarship through the national organization Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD).

The ONE Campus Challenge Student Advisory Board is a national committee comprised of top student advocates from around the country. These advocates were brought to Washington, D.C., during the summer of 2013 to help plan for the seventh season of the ONE Campus Challenge and also serve in an advisory position for the 2013-2014 school year.

On this study tour, students examined multiple aspects of French culture and music while staying in Paris. They learned about French people by observation of and interaction with French civilization through daily, guided visits to points of interest best-suited to acquire knowledge in history, architecture, and the arts.
