The lowland tropical rainforest of Costa Rica is home to a diverse assemblage of life forms. This study tour was designed for nature lovers who want to explore the jungle to learn more about diversity. Behavior was examined from both the neuroscience and evolution perspective. Biodiversity field surveys - plants, insects, amphibians, birds, and more - gave way to short-term, student-designed field studies in the rainforest.

This course examined the development of the modern movements in art and theatre at the end of the 19th century, and the impact and influences of the movement into the 21st century in New York.

From June 8 to 23, 2014, history professor Eric Pullin lead a group targeting the most important objectives related to World War II in France, Great Britain, and Belgium.

This course focused on how physical geographic factors and human intervention have affected the flora and fauna of the world's largest freshwater tropical island. The tour included a trip to the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua. Students were required to engage in significant research about the varied landscape and history of Nicaragua before leaving the campus. The course also contained a service learning component.

China possesses a long history and a complex geography, and it has distinctive cultural heritages. On this trip, students were encouraged to learn broadly in the context of a rapidly changing civilization and developed an understanding of the class material by direct contact with the people, communities, businesses, places, cuisine, art, religion, and architecture that served as their unwritten text.

Students learned a variety of journalistic writing styles and engaged in sports journalism as they attended baseball games throughout California. Students attended Padres, Dodgers, Angels, Giants and Athletics games, with a total of six to eight games over two weeks. Other professional athletic events and stadium tours, as well as non-sports-related cultural activities and museums, were also a part of the study tour.

Religion and Classics professor Daniel Schowalter co-directed excavations at Omrit, near Kiryat Shemona in northern Israel. The Omrit site features a series of Roman temples built between 50 B.C.E. and 80 C.E.

A hallmark of the Carthage experience since the mid-1990s, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience offers students across academic divisions the opportunity to engage in collaborative full-time research with professors. Students work closely with a faculty mentor on a new or developing line of research.

A total of 766 students have been named to the Carthage College Dean's List for the Spring 2014 semester.

A total of 602 students participated in the ceremony Sunday, May 25, in the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center Field House.

More than 50 student athletes in 16 winter/spring sports were named to an all-conference team.

The Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. holds a 10-day Information Fluency Workshop. The workshop introduces undergraduate students to important sources of information for the study of classics, and develops their ability to access, evaluate, and manage resources in a variety of formats.

Global Heritage courses are concerned with ideas, works, and practices of non-Western traditions. The Global Heritage Competition is held annually to honor exceptional work in projects with a focus on non-Western traditions and peoples. All projects are eligible to enter, including essays, poems, musical compositions, visual or dramatic compositions, reportage, documentaries, and other cutting-edge forms not anticipated by the Global Heritage Oversight Committee.

The Carthage Intern of the Year is awarded with $250 and has his or her name displayed prominently on a plaque in the Career Services office. All currently enrolled students who have participated in experiential learning (SURE, field placements, internships, student teaching etc.) are eligible for the award. These experiences could have been for credit or no credit, paid or unpaid.

Carthage College held the fourth annual Celebration of Scholars on Friday, May 2, 2014. Celebration of Scholars showcases the research, scholarly, and creative achievements of students and faculty from all academic divisions at Carthage.

Carthage music major David Godbold '16 was accepted into the Composition Symposium at the Oregon Bach Festival. This honor is awarded to outstanding students through competitive application process. David will be one of the few undergraduates attending the symposium.

ONE at Carthage has once again won a national competition. This is the second national win for the organization, a grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that works to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease around the world.

The students presented their work with Days for Girls International. Days for Girls is a non-profit organization that empowers girls around the world by direct distribution of sustainable feminine hygiene kits that can last up to three years.

The grant will pay for the cost of taking a nationally certified fitness certification. Each student will then intern in the Semler Fitness center during the 2014-2015 school year with ACE-CPT certified graduate student Tyler Prochnow. Their services as group or individual fitness trainers will be offered free of charge to Carthage faculty, staff and students.

Winners receive funding to cover the costs of Carthage's annual trip to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, which takes place in September 2014. Congratulations to our winners!

In the last two months, Ben Simington learned he received not one, but two prestigious scholarships to study Hindi.

One student from Carthage College was selected to present research at Posters on the Hill in Washington.

A total of 29 Carthage students presented their research at the 2014 National Conference on Undergraduate Research from April 3-5 at the University of Kentucky.
