Presented at the first ever Carthage DREAM Conference
The DREAM Conference focuses on active responses to intolerance in many forms, including bigotry, bullying, discrimination, and violence. Students from all fields were invited to address the theme "Experiences, Challenges and Learning from a Place of Difference." Students have submitted academic papers, projects focused on activism, and works of art. Projects may address the theme within the United States or in any region throughout the world.

"A Journey of Senses in Spain: Music and Cultural Heritage" was a study and performance tour of the Carthage College Choir. Students examined Spain's cultural heritage and the distinct differences between the autonomous regions: their different historical influences, artistic styles, official languages, celebrations and separatist ambitions.

Religion and Society in Modern India" was a three-week study tour where students encountered three contemporary Indian religious communities: Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. Students examined the life and interactions of these three groups and analyzed how these interactions have been (and continue to be) shaped by their historical and cultural context.

"The Economics and Science of Rural Development in Guatemala" took students to Guatemala to study rural development practices. Students considered how the sustainability of economic progress depends on its impact on natural systems and on the effectiveness of social institutions that mediate conflicts between the desire for immediate economic gains and the need to protect the natural systems on which long-term economic progress depends.

Students on the "Economics and Business in Southern Africa" study tour explored a stunning variety of spectacular natural environments, exotic wildlife, historic townships, uniquely sophisticated cities, world-renowned cuisine, and very lively and diverse cultures. On the tour, students visited South Africa, Botswana, and Kingdom of Lesotho and met with famous economists, businessmen, writers, and artists.
