Carthage College Neuroscience majors Jessica Fletcher '20 and Allie Wessel '20, and Professor Kevin Morris recently attended the 2020 Emerging Researchers in STEM National Conference in Washington, DC. Fletcher and Wessel both gave poster presentations on their research at Carthage. The conference gave awards to outstanding poster and oral presentations in each STEM field. Fletcher's poster describing her research with biosurfactants won second place in the chemistry division. The ERN conference is sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs and the National Science Foundation. Each year approximately 1600 graduate and undergraduate students from across the country attend.

The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) announced their honorees for the Fall All-Academic All-Conference Award with 85 student-athletes from Carthage College being selected.

Carthage College men's basketball forward Kienan Baltimore was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday, February 10. Baltimore led all scorers with 27 points as the Red Men beat No. 8 Elmhurst 81-77 on Wednesday on the road. The senior from Zion, Ill. finished the week with eight points and three assists as Carthage defeated Millikin 68-63 for their third straight victory. The Red Men return home facing North Park on Wednesday, February 12 starting at 7 p.m.

Carthage's Matt Slivinski was selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Volleyball Players of the Week. Slivinski, a junior outside hitter from Willow Springs, Illinois and Lyons Township High School, averaged 5.46 kills for the 2-1 Red Men. He had 24 kills, five digs and hit .340 in a five-set loss to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). He then had 19 kills, four digs and hit .378 in a sweep at California Lutheran, followed by 28 kills and five digs in a five-set win against UC-Santa Cruz.

United Soccer Coaches announced their 2019 Division III All-Region teams, selecting Carthage's Ivan Esquivel to the Second Team in the Central Region. The senior adds yet another honor to his name after he was selected to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin First Team last month. Esquivel led the Red Men this year in assists with six, and finished second on the team with 14 total points. The midfielder tallied four goals on the season, scoring a game-winner against Alma on September 8, and an eventual game-winner against Millikin on October 26. This marks the third time in his career Esquivel was chosen to an All-Region team by United Soccer Coaches, after he was named to the Third Team as both a sophomore and junior.

United Soccer Coaches announced their 2019 Division III All-Region teams, selecting Carthage's Jacey Kent to the Third Team in the Central Region. Kent, who was named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin first team for the second consecutive year, finished the season with four goals and two assists for 10 points. The midfielder also registered one penalty kick goal on the season. This marks the first time in her career Kent was chosen to an All-Region team by the United Soccer Coaches.

The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) announced the winners of their men's and women's swim and dive players of the week on Tuesday, with Carthage College's Cooper Hawkins claiming an award. The men's swimmer of the week went to Cooper Hawkins who swam in 13 events during the Carthage College Classic this past weekend. Hawkins swam a season-best time 4:01.00 in the 400-yard IM for first, a season-best 1:52.65 in the 200-yard IM for first and a clocked time of 2:05.54 for second in the 200-yard breaststroke. The senior from Batavia, Ill. also tallied personal bests in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.70), 200-yard butterfly (1:58.15), 100-yard backstroke (54.74) and 50-yard freestyle relay split (21.81).

The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) announced the winners of their men's and women's swim and dive players of the week on Tuesday and Carthage College senior Trisha Garcia claimed an award. Garcia won her second consecutive CCIW Diver of the Week honor after winning the one-meter diving event coming seven points shy of a regional-qualifying score (388.6). The senior from Burr Ridge, Ill. also tallied a score of 346.95 in the three-meter diving event. Carthage has won each CCIW Diver of the Week honor to start the season and as the Lady Reds finished the three-day meet with a team score fo 3,294 for first.

Cecilia Urbano, majoring in Nursing at Carthage College has been selected to receive a CIC/UPS Scholarship provided by the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, DC.
