CCIW Swimmer of the Week
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced on Tuesday, that Carthage College's Sam Gabriel has been named the CCIW Men's Swimmer of the Week. Gabriel, a junior from Arlington Heights, Illinois, helped lead the Red Men to a first place finish at the Calvin Quad meet over the weekend. He won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.80, which ranks 11th in the country and is also an unrested best.

Earned honors at National Association of Teachers of Singing competition
Eight Carthage music students participated in the Wisconsin regional voice competition for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). The competition was held Nov. 2-3 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

CCIW Tournament Champion - Women's Volleyball
The Carthage College Lady Reds overcame a 2-0 deficit to the number-eight team in the nation to win the 2017 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women's Volleyball Tournament Championship, defeating the top seeded Millikin University Big Blue in five sets, 3-2. The tenth straight win by Carthage moves the Lady Reds to 25-8 on the season, while the Big Blue fall to 28-7. With the championship, the Lady Reds earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship.

Carthage student Erika Salonga, majoring in nursing from Gurnee has been selected to receive a CIC/UPS Scholarship provided by the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, DC.

CCIW Swimmer of the Week
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced on Tuesday, that Carthage College's Kate Hugo has been named the CCIW Women's Swimmer of the Week. Hugo, a senior from Neenah, Wisconsin, won three individual events during the Calvin Quadrangular over the weekend. She won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.57, which was less than a second from her tapered best time at the CCIW Championship last season. She also won the 100-yard backstroke (59.46), 200-yard backstroke (2:08.93) and was part of the winning 200-medley relay (1:51.47) and 400-medley relay (4:04.85).

CCIW Women's Golf Champion
Sarah Lyman won the 2017 CCIW Women's Golf Championship with a two-day score of 149 (+5). Lyman became the fourth Lady Red to land the CCIW Women's Golf Individual Championship, joining Kayla Meyer (2015), McKenzie Parks (2014) and Joanna Polley (1996). The 2016 CCIW Women's Golf Championship saw Lyman register second place with a three-day score of 236 (+20), trailing champion Jordan Koehler by one stroke (235, +19). Fast forward to the 2017 event, and Lyman edges Koehler by eight strokes (157).

CCIW Player of the Week - Volleyball
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced on Tuesday that Carthage College's Megan Behrendt and Ellie LeCount have swept the week's CCIW Women's Volleyball Player of the Week honors. Behrendt, a sophomore outside hitter from Lindenhurst, Illinois, averaged 4.29 kills per set and hit .306 for the 3-1 Lady Reds last week. She finished with 14 kills, hit .444 and added seven digs in a sweep of Elmhurst on September 27. LeCount, a sophomore setter from Racine, Wisconsin averaged 10.14 assists and 2.57 digs per set for the 3-1 Lady Reds last week. She finished with 30 assists and 10 digs vs. Elmhurst, 40 assists and eight digs against Augustana, 37 assists and four digs vs. Coe, and 35 assists and three digs against UW-Stevens Point.

CCIW Player of the Week - Football
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced on Monday that Carthage College's Tommy Bazarek has been named the week five CCIW Football Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance against Carroll University this past Saturday. Bazarek, a junior punt returner and wide receiver from Park Ridge, had a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown during the Red Men's 55-20 win over Carroll on Saturday. He finished the game with four punt returns for 89 yards and his 22.25 yards per punt return was a season best. Bazarek added 101 receiving yards and two touchdowns, giving him 190 all-purpose yards against the Pioneers.

CCIW Player of the Week - Football
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced on Monday that Carthage College sophomore running back Jamel Davis has been named the CCIW's Offensive Player of the Week following his career day at Augustana. The honor is the first of Davis's career and Jamel becomes the first Offensive Player of the Week since Jamahl Wright received the award on Sept. 29, 2014. Davis, a sophomore running back from Naples, Florida, rushed for a career-high 177 yards on 20 carries in helping lead the Red Men to a 55-14 win at Augustana on Saturday. He also tied a career high with three rushing touchdowns and he was never tackled for a loss of yardage. As a team, Carthage rushed for a season-high 294 yards.

The 15 juniors in Carthage's first nursing cohort received their white lab coats in a Sept. 23 ceremony, a rite of passage signaling the transition to the clinical portion of their education.

CCIW Player of the Week - Football
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced Monday that Carthage College's Shawntrel Garner has been named the CCIW Defensive Player of the Week following his performance this past Saturday. Garner, a senior nickel back from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, helped the Red Men defense orchestrate their second-straight shutout in a 31-0 win over Bethel (Minn.) on Saturday. He totaled a game-high nine tackles (seven solo) five tackles-for-loss, one sack and an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown.

A hallmark of the Carthage experience since the mid-1990s, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience offers students across academic divisions the opportunity to engage in collaborative full-time research with professors. Students work closely with a faculty mentor on a new or developing line of research.

Presented at national mathematics conference
These students presented their research based on the Ising Model, a mathematical model for the polarization ferromagnetic materials. They have been working together this summer to study and extend this model as part of the SURE program, and are advised by Professor Haley Yaple. The students gave two talks at MathFest, an annual conference for mathematics and math education that was held July 26-29 in Chicago.

Named as a Noyce Scholar
The National Science Foundation has awarded Carthage College about $1.2 million to recruit strong STEM students to fill gaps in the high school teaching field. With this grant from the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, Carthage can provide partial scholarships for up to 26 students over the next five years. The program is open to enrolled students majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics.

Traveled to the Enactus National Exposition
The Carthage Enactus team headed to Kansas City for the organization's National Exposition for the ninth consecutive year. The group earned their bid at the Chicago Regional Competition. Only about 175 of over 450 teams are invited to nationals.
